Review: Concept 2 Model E

Concept 2 Model E

We reviewed the Concept 2 Model E - the grand-daddy of rowing machines.  If you are a rower, you know the name  - we've outlined the good and the bad for you - so you can decide if Concept 2 is the brand for you.

Summary:

The Concept2 E is sturdy machine that will last for years with very little maintenance. It's a great machine to use, comfortable, and particularly good if you're tall or well-built. Nobody ever regrets buying one of these models - you will love it!

Detailed Overview:

The Concept2 is the first choice for many serious rowers and rowing clubs for indoor and out of season training. It's been around for years now setting the benchmark for other manufacturers to follow. It's a solid, reliable rower and will last you for years, even with regular use.

The Model E is around $300 more than the model D, but what extra do you get, and is it worth it. Well yes and no. The E is definitely sturdier with its welded steel frame so will suit the bigger rower. The seat sits a good six inches higher so will be easier to get on and off for the taller person - bit once on it there's little difference. The nickel coated chain on the Model E means it's more resistant to corrosion and therefore will need less maintenance. One other difference is that it comes with the PM4 which is superior console/ monitor to the E's PM3 (see below).

So if you're on the large side, tall or will be giving your rowing machine some serious stick then perhaps the Model E is for you, otherwise the D will give you almost as much - for less.

The Console/ Monitor
The standard console with the Concept2 model E is the PM4.The LCD screen displays all the usual workout data such as calories, strokes per minute, distance rowed, time etc. You can choose between a number of screens to display the data you need in your preferred format. The PM4 also comes with three games that will add some fun to your training - these aren't to everyones taste so you can take them or leave them. Our favorite is the 'race boat' option which allows you to compete against a boat on screen to a set pace or even against yourself from a previous session :0) You can also display your previous performances on one screen.

One big advantage over the PM3 is that the PM4 is compatible with the wireless Garmin heart rate monitor and comes with a chest strap. This means you can train in your optimum heart rate zone for maximum benefits. The PM4 can be used with Polar heart monitors but you need to purchase an additional receiver first.

The PM4 console also comes with a 32K memory card that will store your workout data and personal preferences for up to 5 people.

Also well worth considering is the Slide accesory to give you the sensation of rowing on water. You place the machine on the slides and as you pull you slide back as if you were on water - neat!
